Ø All scholarships are a one-time award and you may apply for more than one scholarship.

Ø All applications must include a copy of your acceptance letter from the technical school, trade school, nursing school, college or university that you are planning to attend. (Acceptance letters must be turned in on or before Friday, May 3.)

Ø The Blacklick Valley Scholarship Committee along with several donors of the scholarships will make selections of the recipients.

Ø Some of the scholarships require an essay in order to be eligible (12 point, double spaced)

Blacklick Valley Junior Senior High School Scholarships (2012-13)

 

The following scholarships are available to members of this year’s graduating class. All scholarships are a one-time award. All applications should include a copy of your acceptance letter from the technical school, trade school, college or university that you are planning to attend (by May 3). The Blacklick Valley Scholarship Committee and several donors will make selections of the recipients. You may apply for as many scholarships as you would like. Amounts and availability may change from year to year.

 

BVEA Scholarship – essay required

The Blacklick Valley Educational Association provides a scholarship to a graduating senior who will pursue a career in the field of education.

Requirements: Write an essay on why you want to become a teacher.

Amount of Award = $ 250

 

PTO Scholarship – essay required

See attached sheet for information regarding criteria.

Amount of Award = $ 500

                                      

Cambria Cogen Company Scholarship – essay required

The Cambria CoGen Scholarship is a non-renewable $500 award presented to a graduating senior pursuing a secondary education career in Mathematics, Engineering,   Science-related field, Environmental, Safety, or a related trade school enrolled in electrical or a maintenance field (Trade School can be either a two or four year term).

Ø Student must submit a written essay on your career choice and the reason you chose this field.

Ø Student must have applied to and been accepted to a college or university.

Ø Classes must be scheduled to begin in the upcoming fall semester.

Ø Student must have a minimum grade point average of 90% or equivalent.

Ø Student must not have a history of disciplinary infractions.

Ø Student must not be receiving any other local scholarships (college/university grants or endowments are acceptable).

Ø Community involvement. Students need to submit a list of all activities (athletics included) that they participated in at school. 

Amount of Award = $500

Michael Worthington Memorial Scholarship – essay required

The Michael Worthington Memorial Scholarship is open to any student.

Requirements: Students should submit an essay which should include why you feel that you should win or deserve the scholarship. The essay should focus on the career field you will be entering and why you chose that field and college / university. Include all past accomplishment and personal experiences that will facilitate success in your future.  

Amount of Award = number and amount to be determined

 

Ryan Byich Memorial Scholarship – essay required

The Ryan Byich Memorial Scholarship is open to any student, male or female, who is a member of any type of athletic sport.

Requirements: Students should submit an essay which should include why you feel that you should win/deserve the scholarship; future plans including college you are committed to and career field you will be entering and why you chose that school/field; Include all extracurricular activities and/or community services and/or offices held, also why you chose the activities/services and how you think they have impacted your future. What did you take from these activities/services that you can use as a tool for life; include any/all athletic achievements and any awards previously won. Also, include how athletics have impacted you and what tools for life have you taken from playing sports. The finance committee of the scholarship is responsible for the selection of the recipient(s).

Derek Brothers Memorial Scholarship – essay required

The Derek Brothers Memorial Scholarship is open to any senior who meets the following critera:

Ø Planning on entering the workforce or furthering their education. 

Ø Be recognized as a student who displays the same qualities and characteristics that made Derek the person he was (kind, caring, compassionate, sense of humor, and treated everyone fairly without judgment

Ø Compose an essay of at least 200 words explaining your future ambitions and why it is important to display the qualities that Derek believed in.

Amount of Award = number and amount to be determined

 

Charles & Margaret Kupchella Scholarship

This scholarship shall provide support to an outstanding and deserving student who will pursue their educational goals as a full time student enrolled at Indiana University of Pennsylvania based upon the following criteria:

Ø The student must be enrolled as a full time entering freshman at IUP.

Ø The student must have at least a 85% GPA or be ranked in the top ten percent of his/her high school graduating class.

Ø The student must demonstrate financial need to pursue higher education.

Ø The student must demonstrate good personal character and display promise for future success.

If there is no graduating student attending IUP, no scholarship award will be given for that year and the interest income will be added to the principal of the fund.

Amount of Award = $ 920

 

 

 

 

 

Phillip Kupchella Memorial Scholarship

This scholarship shall provide support to an outstanding and deserving student who will pursue their educational goals as a full time student enrolled at Indiana University of Pennsylvania based upon the following criteria:

Ø The student must be enrolled as a full time entering freshman at IUP.

Ø The student must have at least a 85% GPA or be ranked in the top ten percent of his/her high school graduating class.

Ø Preference will be given to student(s) who has (have) participated in the Forensics program at Blacklick Valley.

Ø The student must demonstrate financial need to pursue higher education.

Ø The student must demonstrate good personal character and display promise for future success.

If there is no graduating student attending IUP, no scholarship award will be given for that year and the interest income will be added to the principal of the fund.

Amount of Award = $ 1,180

 

Shontelle Ostinowsky Memorial Scholarship

Mr. and Mrs. John Ostinowsky have established a scholarship in memory of their daughter Shontelle. The scholarship began with the graduating class of 2001. The following criteria will be used in the selection of the recipient:

Ø The student will have been accepted at the University of Pittsburgh or any of its branch campuses.

Ø The student will have been active in school sponsored activities.

Amount of Award = $ 500

 

The Mario J. and Anne C. Creany Memorial Scholarship

Sponsored by the family of Mario J. Creany and Anne C. Creany

Mario J. Creany was Superintendent of Blacklick Valley School District from 1966 through 1978. Prior to becoming Superintendent, he worked in the district as a teacher, guidance counselor, home school visitor and principal. Mario and his wife Anne, were strong supporters of education and believed all students should have the opportunity to attend college.

This scholarship is to be awarded to a deserving female who demonstrates the qualities Mr. and Mrs. Creany exemplified – character, scholarship, service, leadership, and the willingness to work hard to achieve goals.

Amount of Award = $ 500

Dino Rudolph Memorial Scholarship

Mr. and Mrs. Dino Rudolph have established a scholarship in memory of their son Dino. The scholarship began with the graduating class of 2002. The scholarship is presented to a graduating senior who has displayed cooperation, friendship, and service towards his/her fellow classmates. If possible, the scholarship will be awarded to a student who has not received any other Blacklick Valley sponsored scholarships.

   Paul Shandor Memorial Scholarship

The Paul Shandor Memorial Scholarship is presented to a graduating senior who has perpetuated the spirit and determination that Coach Paul Shandor tried to instill in the students and athletes whose lives he touched as a teacher and coach at Blacklick Valley.

The finance committee of the scholarship is responsible for the selection of the recipient(s). The amount may be split among several students.

                                                              APC Scholarship

The American Polish Citizens Club scholarship is presented to a graduating senior who is committed to continuing their education. The American Polish Club recognizes that there are many students that need financial assistance. It is their hope that this will help in some way for student to continue his or her education. If possible, the scholarship will be awarded to a student who has not received any other Blacklick Valley sponsored scholarships.

Amount of Award = 2 @ $1,000

 Foundation for Educational Excellence Scholarship

The Foundation for Educational Excellence scholarship is presented to a graduating senior who meets the following criteria:

Ø is in the top 1/3 of their class

Ø  exhibits strong academic performance while being well rounded, as evidenced by their participation in extracurricular activities

Ø demonstrates characteristics of hard work, drive, determination and purpose in everything they do. 

The funding for this award comes from two sources. Monies collected as part of the Blacklick Valley School District dress down days and contributions from a golf fund raising initiative sponsored by a small group of former Blacklick Valley employees and students.

Colver Power Project Continuing Education Scholarship

The following criteria will be used in the selection of the recipient:

Ø The student has to have maintained a 77% average through four years of high school and had no major disciplinary infractions during that time.

Ø  The student must possess a positive attitude, display character traits of a caring person, have common sense, and show responsibility and perseverance.

Ø Financial need of the student will be considered but is not a major factor in the selection process. 

Ø  If possible, the scholarship will be awarded to a student who has not received any other Blacklick Valley sponsored scholarships.
